ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I was born in the East End of London in 1956. Following work, my family settled in the industrial town of Slough where I received a secondary education in an infamous school known more for its criminal records than its academic ones. I was fortunate enough to have been taught by the generation of teachers from the sixties who had ideas in their desks instead of canes. However, given the nature of my environment with its work ethic, my need for a proper job far outweighed any inclination of becoming a writer.

I remember from an early age being interested in the process of writing. The discovery, at the age of five, of the meaning of the word “because”, was like opening Pandora’s Box. So my journey began to find a place in the world where I would be allowed to write. Such is the nature of hindsight, this, of course, turned out to be more of a struggle than I could have imagined. At the time I was not so much aware of the struggle as the need to navigate a working class environment to find the correct door into the privileged world of the creatives.

Selling wallpaper for a year I had saved enough money to buy a 50cc moped which enabled me to widen my choice my work. After writing a chance letter to a Film Studios, I found myself on the lowest rung of the film industry ladder, making tea and delivering documents to the far flung corners of the studios. I went on to become a freelance Assistant Film Director surviving the rigours of unemployment with a number of normal jobs while waiting for the next film. While waiting I began to write and read philosophy.

After twenty five years of working in the film industry, I still could not find the time or space necessary for the undertaking of writing a novel. The opportunity arose in the form of role reversal. I moved to the west coast of France and became a house husband. In between the births of two daughters, a number of deaths and many of those unavoidable events life hurls at you, I managed to write two film scripts and to throw away the first draft of this, my first novel, “Once upon a time in Catatonia”.

The rollercoaster narrative of the twists and often macabre turns of Alex Wonder’s search for his homeland, provides a blend of storytelling that would appeal, not only to the devoted readers of fantasy and philosophy, but those seeking a good story.
